Most beginning youth coaches don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. Includes the history of football, detailed practice plans, glossary, techniques for staff selection and dealing with parents, film study tips, and nine charts for keeping track of your team.

$28.00, 423 pages, 8 1/2 x 11 paperback

Football is, bar none, the most difficult sport to both play and coach. It’s a highly complex, intricate game that few people understand well. For the inexperienced youth football coach, the sport can become a nightmare as events quickly get beyond his control. From problems with discipline to player injuries, football can be extremely thorny for the newcomer to coach.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Impact! Coaching Successful Youth Football, Volume One: The Program is a detailed manual for the rookie coach. You won’t find specific Xs and Os. The book doesn’t contain offensive, defensive, or special teams systems for use on the field (those will be found in Volumes II-IV).

So why get it?

Because Impact! is the first book of its kind. This volume not only details the history of football, from the Roman harpastum to the modern halfback, but it also explains the positions and terminology of the most complex sport played in America. More than just a dictionary, however, Impact! also takes you step-by-step through your first twenty days of practice, from the moment you gather your first group of players together, to the day you win your first game. What drills you should use; how you need to install your offense, defense, and special teams; and how to manage your practice time so you can avoid missing any of the little details of the sport, everything a new coach needs to know to get his staff and his players ready to play the best sport in the world.

Coaching any type of athletics is really teaching. Teachers follow a logical progression that takes advanced concepts and breaks them down into manageable chunks for their students. Football should be taught in the same manner. From basic stances and footwork, to explosive speed and decisive blocking and tackling, this book shows you how to plan your practices to make everything run smoothly from the start of the season to the championship banquet, no matter what systems you choose to run.

You can’t coach a team without players, and you can’t have players without parents. More good coaches quit coaching football because of parental issues than any other reason. Impact! Volume One will help you get the most respect out of the parents, without sacrificing team discipline or undermining your program.

What about the staff? Where can you find the guys to help you out? Impact! will also help give you some guidelines for selecting and preparing a staff. It might surprise you when you discover who the best staff members are likely to be.

Also containing the first ever glossary of football terminology in a book devoted specifically for youth football, Volume One additionally contains six appendices with information on drills to reinforce the skills of football, awards to consider, and charts to help you improve your team.

Everyone remembers their first football coach. You’ve got a chance to be a real hero to a bunch of kids. Give them your best shot by being fully prepared to teach them how to safely play the most complex sport in America.

Go on, make an Impact! on their lives.

What Readers Have Said:

"Great job, Coach Wade, on Impact!. I can relate to many of the subjects you cover in your book, especially 'being the coach you wish you'd had...' I can look back to when I played and remember that we had no coaching on our team. We had 'hit somebody' coaches. Well, if you coached me and told me who I am supposed to hit, I'd be glad to!

"Anyway, great job, coach!"

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm halfway through Impact!. Wow, what a book! Your book is so helpful to this aspiring coach that it has officially been promoted to prime real estate. I've got Jack Gregory's BBB Playbook next to my computer, Jack Reed's Coaching Youth Football on my nightstand, and Derek Wade's Impact! in the magazine rack next to the can! Seriously, that's the highest compliment I can give it. You've made it to the top of the heap in this coach's house!"

“Hadn't even gotten out of the foreward before I went rooting around in my desk looking for a highlighter. I feel like I'm back in college (in a class I'm actually interested in) - reading and then re-reading sections, highlighting key parts, making notes in the margins, sitting and pondering passages and how they fit into things I knew or didn't know, or thought I knew but didn't...”

“Just finished the book yesterday… great read. Your info on dealing with parents and selecting your staff was some great stuff. I was expecting a boring read, but you kept it entertaining. I'm gonna MAKE my coaching staff read it before the season starts.”

“Derek, I just received my copy at work this morning and I’ve seriously considered going home ‘sick’ for the rest of the day just to keep reading it. Truly amazing book, I just wish I would have had it prior to last season. I am going to try and convince our board to purchase enough copies for each coach in our association. It should be mandatory reading.”

“In my opinion Impact! is a testament for all youth coaches. I’d recommend it to aspiring coaches, inspired coaches and expired coaches alike. Man, what a book! What a book....actually now that I have read it I can honestly say I would have paid double the asking price had I have known it would have been this thorough. If this is Volume One: The Program then I can’t wait until Volume Two comes out!

Thanks!”

“Derek Wade is one of the rare men that can effectively communicate to the neophyte or experienced coach the ‘how-to’s of successful youth coaching. He is a coach of coaches and does so with wit, humor and detailed plans and examples. His exhaustive templates do all the work to help you better select, organize, scheme, rep and train any team.

“This is required reading for my 70 plus coaches.”

“Coach Derek Wade has undertaken a monumental task with his multi-volume work on coaching football, Impact!. He is attempting no less than the inclusion of an entire library’s worth of football coaching knowledge in one opus.

“Volume 1 is a terrific start: a book that an absolute beginner can pick up to learn the history, terminology, theory, and practical application of coaching the great American game of football.

“I await the next volume with great and pleasant anticipation.”

“Chapters four and five make the whole book worth it. …The most systematic breakdown of film I have ever read, loved it. The tips for videographers are nicely done, and the format for breaking down film is positively elegant.

“…The parents’ meeting section was very well done and handled one of the most difficult chores for the ‘average’ youth coach to deal with quite effectively.”

“I can only say thanks so many times. We used most of your install technique for our practices – a little tougher to get as much done with 6-7 year olds – and we use all the scouting techniques and drills. I read your book “Impact!” cover to cover two weeks ago and I can tell you it saved our season. We have a long way to go, but I’m confident that we can organize these little guys into a great organization.”

“Thanks Again!”

“Just a quick update on the progress of the team. The team is doing great. We played and won our first game. We did it with discipline and skill, not talent. We practice hard and the kids are moving all the time just like you advised. I run the drills just like you have outlined. Because we didn’t have very many practices ahead of time, I run a pretty straight forward offense. No pulling, no end arounds, just straight up the gut, 3 yards at a time. Because we spend a lot of time on blocking and tackling drills during practices, it works perfectly. The kids had such a ball playing their first game and the whole team was involved. The focus wasn’t just on one running back that runs it around the end, but on the line that blocks. They are truly a “team” and playing that way. After each offensive play, the backs are talking to the line telling them how great the hole was. Defensively, same thing…everyone staying home, tackling “eyes to the sky”, and always moving. The other team was worn out after the first ten minutes and we were still raring to go. I’m proud of my boys and I’m so very thankful to you for your book, because had I not read that, I would have been one of those coaches that spent all their time trying to come up with tricky offenses and not teaching the kids the fundamentals to play in the next level. Thanks again coach and please….keep working on those books. I know it must be a hassle and take up a lot of your time, but you did just change the lives of the 16 kids here in Newberg, OR. It really matters what you do so keep at it.”
